The Business KCRW

The Business KCRW

I have been listening to the The Business which comes from KCRW in Los Angeles for several years. Its a thirty minute broadcast the main part of which is an interview with a film maker or TV showrunner. But the most important part is probably the opening ten minutes when host Kim Masters is joined by a colleague for the 'Banter'. Over the last few months its moved away from deal making in Hollywood and more towards the collapse of careers and the travails of major media organisations. While there have been some fascinating conversations along the way, with Ridley Scott on re-shooting All the Money In The World, and with Frank Oz on his complicated relationship with the Muppets, it's the Weinstein story and the resulting MeToo campaign that has cast a shadow over Hollywood. Masters has been at the forefront of trying to make the victims voices heard over the years and has been toe to toe with Weinstein herself. Its never anything less than a fascinating half hour, and because its all on air all year, perhaps taken for granted a little. Kim Masters recently showed up here as a talking head on a documentary about recent events, at which point I realised that despite listening for several years, I had absolutely no idea what she looked like. How nice in the multimedia age to still have that air of old fashioned mystery of not really knowing what the face behind the microphone looks like.
